Yet, both games are still an enjoyably “tough” and “empowering” experience. The original games are a tougher challenge to actually play. On the other hand, the original games are technically more badass because they don’t make the player feel powerful by weakening the monsters slightly ( eg: with “headshot” mechanics etc.). On the one hand, “Brutal Doom” feels more badass because the monsters are more aggressive, the combat is more impactful and your weapons are more powerful. And I couldn’t really find a clear answer to this question. If you haven’t heard of “Brutal Doom” before, it is a mod that turns the classic 1990s “Doom” games into the most ludicrously ultra-gruesome games you will ever play – whilst also making some changes to the difficulty, pacing and balance too.Īnyway, whilst playing, I suddenly wondered “ Is ‘Brutal Doom more badass than the original un-modified games?“.
This is mostly because, whilst trying to find an idea for a blog article, I decided to distract myself by re-playing a few levels of “Final Doom” using the “ Brutal Doom” mod. Well, I thought that I’d talk about “trade-offs” and creativity today.
